Artist Spotlight: kidwifdacrayons aka Marcus Pettiford
In his own words:
Before I continue, a special thanks to all the attendees, coordinators, and supporters of PRP3. My name is "kidwifdacrayons." Unfortunately I am currently incarcerated. This is my 18th year of incarceration. I have been in prison since a teen. Fortunately I will be released from prison this year.
There is a funny story behind the name "kidwifdacrayons." A close friend would make shady comments while I was working on my art. He would say, " there he goes playing with those crayons again." As a result, I came up with the moniker "kidwifdacrayons." I am huge admirer of Bisa Butler. In my opinion, she is in a class of her own. Her work is second to none.
My favorite medium is mixed. Its the different textures that do it for me. The gloss, the rubs, the oil... Mixing mediums gives a piece more character. I create with the intention of illustrating an idea or conveying a story. I would like for my work to speak to the viewer, and have beautiful aesthetic.
I selected Obama as my subject because he influenced me the most. I remember secretly crying when he was elected, but still wanted to put a microscope on his office. This piece is a sort of dichotomy of veneration and critique.
It is extremely rewarding, but difficult to create under these circumstances.
In one word, ALCHEMY.
